Nutrition Society Summer Meeting July 2015

The Future of Animal Products in the Human Diet: Health & Environmental Concerns

Global population growth, increasing economic prosperity in Africa, Asia and South America and a changing world climate are all predicted to challenge our ability to feed the world¡¯s population. As global demand for meat and milk increases, there are conflicting demands for land to produce animal feed and for crops for direct human consumption. Animal agriculture is often described as an inefficient use of resources and methane production, from ruminant animals, is suggested to make a significant contribution to global warming. As a result reducing, or even eliminating, animal products from our diet has been suggested as a solution to maintaining a sustainable global food supply. Advocates will often support this argument by claiming such a change will also have major health benefits for the world¡¯s population. This conference will address the current and future impact of the production and consumption of animal products on human health and the environment. It will also explore more efficient methods of animal production and the alternatives to meat and milk in our diet.
